Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen

Every year on the 1st of May the festival season of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen begins: Until the middle of July the city transforms into an international culture and theater metropolis. Productions of the Off-Theater szene and the Neuer Zirkus form the core of the program.

Kunsthalle Recklinghausen

Located in a former high bunker, the Kunsthalle exhibits pieces of its own collection as well as solo contemporary art exhibitions. For the time of  Ruhrfestspiele in the beginning of May, the Kunsthalle additionally shows a special exhibition.

Zeitreise Strom – The German Electricity Museum

On around 2.500 square metres the visitiors are shown the electrification of the cultural-, social and technical history – at some spots it is specifically intended to touch and try out.

Outside, active and under way

Halde Hoheward

The Landschaftspark Hoheward is indeed located in Herten, but can also be reached quickly from Recklinghausen. With a height of 111 metres and a total area of 170 hectares the slagheap is one of the biggest in the Ruhr area. Located on top of the heap you will find the steel arches of the observatory which are 45 metres high and an obelisk. Also the hike up there is spectacular: Coming from the east you will take the “Drachenbrücke”, from the north you will climb up more than 500 stairs until you reach the summit.

Tip: The “Balkon-Promenade” and the “Ewald-Empore” will offer you the best views.

Stadthafen

Regardless of whether you want to relax, be active or just observe the ships passing by – at the Stadthafen of the Rhein-Herne canal you can either get active or let your soul dangle. With stand up paddling you can either get your workout in on the water or challenge your thrill with bungee jumping from high up above the water.

Trainingsbergwerk Recklinghausen

In the Trainingsbergwerk you will get an interactive and up close experience of the way the coal was mined back in the day. The different guided tours will take you on a journey to coal dust and the life of the miners.
